1816년에 관련 기록이 나오기 시작하고 1856년 기독교 잡지 표제로도 등장하였으나, 흑인 영가 최초의 악보는 1862년에나 생겼으며 그 악보는 바로 필라델피아의 음악수집가이자 여성편집자였던 “루시 맥킴 (Lucy McKim, 1842~1877)”이 편찬한 “흘러라 요단강아, 흘러라 (Roll, Jordan, Roll)”이다.
